Your brake pads are an essential factor of your braking system and they are a part that should never be ignored. Brake pads compress against your brake rotors to create friction in order for your car to stop. Brake pads work really hard, really often. The amount of pressure required to stop a moving vehicle is enormous and gives off a lot of heat which erodes the brake pads.
Worn brake pads means impaired braking which is dangerous for you and others. Which is why consistent testing and assessments of the condition of your brake pads is crucial.
If your brakes squeal - that can be an indication that your brake pads are due for a change; many pads have a small metal piece implanted in them which scrapes on the disc when your brake pads are wearing out, causing that high pitch noise. However, this doesn't indicate that you should wait until you hear noises to get your pads checked, we advise having your brakes inspected at every service.
It is important to remember that brake noises are not only caused by normal wear and any unusual noises anywhere in your car should always be investigated by a qualified professional mechanic.
We offer a Free Vehicle Inspection Report with every car service. As part of our Vehicle Inspection Report we inspect the brake pads for wear and will tell you if they want replacing. We can also recommend the right pad for your driving style and conditions.
Car brake pads can last anywhere between 15,000 to 70,000 km's. This can vary due to a number of elements such as; regular heavy loads, driving style and conditions. If your brake pads are wearing out prematurely your mechanic might advise using a heat resistant or heavier duty brake pad more suited to your vehicle. Larger vehicles such as 4wds, SUV's, light commercials, and trucks often require heavy duty brake pads to cope with the additional load placed on them by the vehicles mass. Vehicles that often tow heavy loads are also candidates for a heavy duty brake pad upgrade.
Some things are best left to the experts and this is one of them. You should never let anyone but a qualified professional touch something as key to your safety as your braking system.
